Ein Handschuhfach ist eine Ablage in einem Personen- oder Lastkraftwagen.
Es befindet sich meistens über dem Fußraum des Beifahrers, integriert in das Armaturenbrett. Bei den meisten Modellen ist es durch eine Klappe verschlossen, die teilweise zusätzlich mit dem Fahrzeugschlüssel abgeschlossen werden kann. In Kleintransportern sind aber auch offene Modelle üblich.
Häufig sind in die Innenseite der Klappe Stift- und Becherhalter integriert, bei modernen Fahrzeugen mit Klimaanlage besteht oft die Möglichkeit, kalte Luft in das Handschuhfach einströmen zu lassen, um Lebensmittel darin zu kühlen.
Die Bezeichnung Handschuhfach rührt daher, dass in frühen Automobilen (oft ohne festes Dach und Heizung) Handschuhe ein wichtiger Ausrüstungsgegenstand für Autofahrer waren, um die Hände vor kalter Zugluft zu schützen – ähnlich wie heute noch bei Motorradfahrern – und die Kfz-Hersteller daher eine Aufbewahrungsmöglichkeit für Handschuhe im Auto erdachten.
A glove box is a storage space in a car or truck.
It is usually located above the passenger’s footwell, integrated into the dashboard. On most models, it is closed by a flap, which can sometimes also be locked with the vehicle key. Open models are also common in small vans.
Often, pen and cup holders are integrated into the inside of the flap, in modern vehicles with air conditioning it is often possible to let cold air flow into the glove compartment in order to cool food in it.
The term glove compartment comes from the fact that in early automobiles (often without a fixed roof and heating) gloves were an important piece of equipment for motorists to protect their hands from cold drafts – similar to how they are still used by motorcyclists today – and the motor vehicle manufacturers therefore a storage option for gloves in the car.
